Quinn's DV Survivor Story

Quinn*, her daughter, and her three grandchildren had fled the abuse. Their biggest obstacle was behind them, but more challenges lay ahead. Though they had brought their Yorkie, Petey*, with them, he wasn’t welcome in the domestic violence shelter. Instead, they started living out of Quinn’s car, a sacrifice they were all willing to make for Petey. But living in the car would make healing and finding housing difficult, and they risked living that way long-term. Working together with her advocate, Quinn applied for a RedRover Relief Safe Escape grant to board Petey. In a matter of weeks, they’d gone from living with abuse, to living in the car, to living somewhere safe – but the family stayed together through it all, thanks to you.

Building Together for Pets and Their People in the Beehive State

Only a fraction of domestic violence shelters in the U.S. can house pets. To help fill this gap, RedRover recently deployed its RedRover Responders team to Utah to expand on-site pet housing options for these families. Over five days, we helped build three individual pet retreats – creating safe, cozy spaces where beloved animals can stay close to their families at a domestic violence shelter. A Legacy Makes Magic Happen for Survivors and their Pets

Shelters need pet programming so families with pets can safely escape abuse together. After our initial connection before the COVID-19 pandemic, it seems almost kismet that we would reconnect with the New Jersey Coalition to End Domestic Violence (NJCEDV) in 2023, just when they started conversations with the Community Foundation of New Jersey about a generous donor’s legacy fund. In the words of Mary Trinity, Associate Director of NJCEDV, “magic happened” from there.

Connecting Communities for People and Pets in Crisis

On May 20, the Don’t Forget the Pets team gathered service providers from across the Minneapolis area for a Housing People and Pets in Crisis workshop, creating a space where collaboration could spark meaningful change. Co-hosted by My Pitbull is Family at their new North Minneapolis Pet Resource Center, the workshop was facilitated by Gabbie Leister, Greater Good Charities Senior Program Manager, and Katie Campbell, RedRover President and CEO.
