20 Years After Katrina: Honoring the Past, Preparing for the Future
The memories of Hurricane Katrina still linger โ the desperation, the heartbreak, and the resilience. Many animals were saved, some families were reunited, and our collective experiences helped shape the future and our approach to disaster response. Fast forward 20 years after Hurricane Katrina, we honor the lives lost, the lives saved, and remain committed to our mission of bringing animals and their people from crisis to care. |

What are Your Memories of Hurricane Katrina?
So much has changed in the 20 years since Hurricane Katrina, but one thing has always been true: our bond with animals can carry us โ and them โ through the most difficult times. Whether you deployed with the RedRover Responders volunteers through UANโs Emergency Animal Rescue Service (RedRoverโs former disaster program), helped in any way you could, or followed the news closely every day, we want to hear about your memories and experience of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005. What effect did these disasters have on your understanding of the human-animal bond?

โA Missing Pieceโ
Koukiโs Happy Tail
We often take for granted that the benefits of spaying and neutering our pets go far beyond preventing litters and finding a loving home for every pet. With the increased prevalence of spaying, not many pet parents are aware of the dangers of pyometra, an infection of the uterus that can often prove fatal. Anja didnโt know about pyometra and never saw the need to have her sweet, six-year-old pittie Kouki spayed if she was unlikely to be impregnated. But shortly after another heat cycle, Kouki began showing signs that something was wrong. She could still be saved โ if they had waited any longer to be diagnosed, the infection could have killed her โ but not without help from our FurEver Friends and a RedRover Relief Urgent Care grant.
